Licensing
Who needs a licence, and how to apply.
Every company or individual carrying on insurance business in Ghana must be licensed by the National Insurance Commission. Licensing makes sure the entities serving the public are financially sound, competently run, and fit to hold the public's trust.
Who must be licensed
- Insurers — life and non-life companies (one company may not write both; life and non-life must be separate legal entities)
- Reinsurers — companies that insure the insurers
- Intermediaries — insurance brokers, reinsurance brokers, and agents
- Service providers — loss adjusters, loss assessors, and technical service providers
How to apply
Applications are made to the Commission, which assesses each applicant against the licensing requirements — including minimum capital, fit-and-proper standards for owners and key officers, and the systems needed to operate soundly.
Licensed entities renew their licences periodically and file returns so the Commission can monitor their continued soundness.
Licensed entities
Confirm whether a company or intermediary is licensed and in good standing.
