Agricultural Insurance Fund
Helping farmers manage weather and production risks through agricultural insurance.
The Agricultural Insurance Fund supports insurance products that protect farmers against losses from drought, flood, pests and other production risks, with the aim of making affordable cover more widely available to Ghana's farming communities.
Overview
Agriculture is central to livelihoods and the economy, yet farmers face significant risks from weather and other hazards. The Agricultural Insurance Fund helps grow the market for agricultural insurance so that more farmers can protect their incomes.
The Fund operates under the Insurance Act, 2021 (Act 1061) and the Commission's supervision.
Objective
To promote the uptake and sustainability of agricultural insurance — including weather-index and area-yield products — by supporting product development, awareness and, where appropriate, premium affordability.
The goal is greater resilience for farmers and for food production.
Governance
A committee constituted under the Act guides the Fund's priorities, working with insurers, agricultural agencies and other partners, within the Commission's supervisory framework.
Who can benefit
Farmers and farming cooperatives are the intended beneficiaries, typically through products offered by licensed insurers participating in agricultural insurance schemes.
Eligibility for a specific scheme depends on the product, crop or region involved.
Modalities
The Fund works through licensed insurers and approved schemes rather than paying farmers directly. Farmers obtain cover from a participating insurer, while the Fund supports the scheme's development and reach.
Speak to a licensed insurer offering agricultural cover, or contact the Commission for information on available schemes.
